PRESCHOOL 2
PRESCHOOL 2: THE FOURS
Children who turn four years old on or before August 31st of the year they are applying for will be placed in Preschool 2. For most children, the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth between the ages of four and five is truly impressive. We have found that by this -- their second year at B.L.A. -- students are beginning to gain confidence and skills in both Spanish and English. During this year, they will continue to do so, while also acquiring more academic skills in phonics, numbers and writing. Strong motor skills are encouraged, along with an emphasis on phonemic awareness. In both the English and Spanish classrooms, the students will work with games, puzzles, and class projects, as well as challenging workbooks. Homework assignments are also introduced to the students at this level, encouraging responsibility and self-discipline.
Teachers use a variety of instructional methods, including visual, auditory, and physical activities. Music, movement, art, storytelling, and free exploration still play a large role in the four year-old classrooms. Thematic curriculum at this level continues to expand in Social Science and Life Science. Mathematic concepts are beginning to be introduced as abstract concepts, and there is a strong focus on language mastery, as well as effective social interaction.
